Road Race Guide

"Club Racing: Getting Started" by Dave Brown, Competition Chairman

Club Racing is the SCCA way to go racing. It is really easy to start, as long as you follow a few details and plan your time accordingly.

Assuming you are already an SCCA member, the first thing you will need to do is get the proper forms. Yes, that's right... paperwork. These papers are actually quite easy to obtain and fill out. You will need to download the Novice Permit Application and the Physical Exam Form. Print these out and complete them. (Obviously, a doctor needs to perform the physical exam and complete that document for you!) If you do not have access to a computer, you can always contact me, and I will mail them to you, or you can call the SCCA National Office.

You will need to schedule a physical exam with a doctor, who will indicate whether you are physically able to receive a competition license. When these forms are fully completed, you will need to let me know, via email or phone, and we will get your novice permit ready. There are a few other items you will need, as well: two passport photos; a copy of your current, valid driver's license; your SCCA ID card; and, $55.00 for the novice permit fee.

Once you have everything together, it only takes about ten minutes to complete the paperwork for your novice permit.

Finally, once you have your novice permit in hand, you are free to take part in SCCA Competition Driver Schools across the country. Furthermore, when your school requirements have been met, you will be able to enter SCCA Regional races and earn your competition license. Be sure to have an excellent grasp of your current SCCA General Competition Rules (GCR), as you will be expected to pass a written test at your schools.

Good luck and enjoy your Club Racing experience! And, remember, everyone in OVR is here to help.
